Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble is an associate professor at UCLA in the Department of Information Studies and African American Studies, a visiting faculty member to the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication, and the author of Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press, 2018).

In her best-selling book, Safiya reveals the racist and sexist algorithmic bias in commercial search engines, drawing from her academic research, which focuses on how digital platforms impact society. Her work is both sociological and interdisciplinary, marking the ways that digital media intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology.
