Carola Rackete

SHIP CAPTAIN, SEA-WATCH

Berlin

Carola resisted law and order to safeguard a migrant rescue ship.

Carola is an ecologist and German ship captain who works for the sea rescue organization Sea-Watch. In June 2019, she was arrested for docking a migrant rescue ship without authorization in the port of Lampedusa, Italy.

This incident, which involved multiple parties from European nations, civil protests, and a crowdfunding campaign of €1 million to support her and the safety of the migrants, eventually ended with the release of Carola. As of July 2019, she was under investigation by Italian authorities for possible criminal activities in regards to undocumented migration. In January 2020, on appeal the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation ruled that Rackete should never have been arrested.
